Demon_Head

This was my first project for my Sculpture class this semester <-ed. fall 2002>. The teacher (Sonny Park) made it pretty open-ended. We just had to make something out of plaster. I figured since Halloween was just around the corner...

During the introductory lesson to plaster she made a point to point out the versatility of plaster -- how you can get very rough and very smooth textures with it. I had already wanted to make a head, and so then the idea occured to me that I could break open (the head) to get a very rough texture to contrast the smoothness of the skin. It's funny that it turned out to be the opposite, in some ways (in that I made the skin craggy and the brain smooth). And of course, with an exposed brain, the idea of a demon automatically came to mind. later I went in with some parafin wax (mixed with a bit of crayolas) and colored it. I would have gone back and desaturated the skintone, but I really got a bit fed-up with it and was glad to be done working on it by the time it was due.
